10 everyday problems a folding e-bike solves

If even one of these is part of your week, a folding e-bike was made for you. A regular bike can't fix most of them, and a standard e-bike only fixes half.

  1. 1
TrainYour station is a 30-minute walk from work.Ride it in about 10 minutes, fold it, and walk straight in.
  2. 2
TrainFull-size bikes aren't welcome on your rush-hour train.Fully folded, it's allowed on most UK trains, even at peak times.
  3. 3
CommutePacked buses, missed connections, late again.Your own transport, door to door, on your own timetable.
  4. 4
CommuteStuck in traffic that hasn't moved in 10 minutes.Ride past the queue in the cycle lane and arrive when you planned to.
  5. 5
CostFuel, parking and clean air zone charges eating into your pay.A full charge costs pennies, and there's nothing to park: it comes with you.
  6. 6
ComfortArriving at work sweaty and out of breath. The motor does the hard work, so you arrive fresh. No shower needed.
  7. 7
ComfortThat hill, and that headwind, on the way home.Pedal assist flattens both, up to the legal 15.5 mph.
  8. 8
HomeA small flat: no shed, no garage, no room in the hallway.Folded, it tucks into a cupboard, under the stairs or beside the sofa.
  9. 9
SecurityYour last bike was stolen while it was locked outside. It never has to stay outside. It comes into your home, your office, under your desk.
  10. 10
TravelNo bike rack, and a normal bike won't fit in the car.It folds into many car boots, caravans and boats, ready to ride when you arrive.

The catch

It only solves these problems if you pick the right one

In the listings they all look alike. The differences show up after you've paid, usually on the first day.

  • Too heavy to carry. The stairs, the train step and the car boot win every single time.
  • The wrong fold. It folds, just not small enough for your boot or your cupboard.
  • Optimistic range. The advertised figure is a best case. Run out, and you're pedalling a heavy bike home.
  • Over the UK legal limit. A motor over 250 W, or a throttle that works above 6 km/h (about 4 mph), means it isn't road-legal as an e-bike.
  • Listings that contradict themselves. Two weights, two battery sizes, one bike.

The free checklist shows you how to spot all five in about five minutes.
